The first drafts on these four pieces were composed in 2001. The main ideas were to evoke beauty, healing, the sea, and the mother of all, the water that surrounds all and constitutes us. Water as an universal symbol of life passed down through the generations... The first musicals already possessed a strong Japanese tinge.
It was on the occasion of Ryuichi Sakamoto's passing in 2023 that I decided to reorchestrate them symphonically in his honor, as I have always been deeply affected by the thematic and instrumental originality of the Japanese composer, also by a boundless attraction and admiration for the Japanese and their ancient culture.
These four pieces are all aquatic, ethereal, suave, melodious, and ultimately epic for the last theme. The musicians of the symphony orchestra augmented by two guitars, one of which is a soloist, two emblematic instruments of the Land of the Rising Sun, the koto and the shamisen, and usual percussion instruments such as the vibraphone and the marimba, will find a simple but full writing along a fabulous spiritual journey devoid of any technical difficulty. A hymn to gentleness, sensitivity, nuance, and interiority, Aqua Simplex is a work entirely devoted to introspection, in order to find within the Jungian Self a remedy for the modern cataclysms of the contemporary era. It's also a fabulous hymn to Japan, a country where Shinto and Feng Shui thought deeply permeates customs, morals, and the art of living expressed in a politeness found nowhere else around the world! The islanders, musicians and orchestras living under the protection of Fujisan will be able to discover the admiring gaze of a French composer for their sublime culture fascinating in many ways.
